What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to help you work, study or migrate to a country where English is the native language.


This includes countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and USA. Apart from these countries, it is also accepted in Europe.

Your ability to Listen, Read, Write and Speak in English will be assessed during the test.

IELTS is graded on a scale of 1-9.

 

IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council; IDP IELTS; and Cambridge University Press & Assessment.

IELTS has two types:

  1. IELTS Academic: for those who want to study abroad

  2. IELTS General Training: for those who are looking for employment or PR (Permanent Residency)

IELTS Test Modes:

  1. Paper based

  2. Computer Delivered Test (CDT)

Test format

 

There are four sections to the test: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking (L, R, W, S).

Listening, Reading and Writing tests are taken on the same day, one after the other, without any breaks in between. The Speaking test may either fall on the same day or any day up to a week before or after the test date. For the Speaking test, you can book a slot online on your preferred date and time. If you fail to choose a slot within the stated time period, a time slot will be automatically allocated to you.

Test duration: 2 hours and 45 minutes.

 

IELTS Test Dates and Centers in India

You may either book your IELTS test online or visit your nearest IDP branch to help you register offline. When you register for IELTS test, you will be asked to select your city and date of preference. The test dates may vary as per location and test type. Once you decide on your preferred test type and location, pick the date that suits you the most.

To make it convenient for our test takers, IDP has test centres in 75 test cities across India.

IELTS test dates are offered upto 4 times in a month making a total of 48 fixed test dates in one calendar year. The availability of IELTS dates in India may differ for the Academic and General Training module.

In order to create flexibility and convenience, tests are mostly held on Saturdays and Thursdays.

Please note that listening, reading, writing (LRW) tests shall take place on the same day while the speaking tests will be conducted up to 7 days prior and/or post the test date. It may be possible that your nearest IELTS test location may not offer the same date as another IELTS test city location.

Results
 

Paper and computer tests

  • Results for IELTS on paper will be released 13 days after your written test.

  • Results for IELTS on computer will be available 3–5 days after your test.

FAQs:

 

Q. What is the validity of IELTS score?

A. An IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) is valid for two (2) years.

 

Q. What if I’m not satisfied with my score?

A. Candidates may apply for a re-mark (Enquiry on Results). This must be done within six weeks of the test date. The candidate may choose which modules are to be re-marked. Complete the application for and submit/courier the same, along with the fee of INR 12,200 (Twelve Thousand Two Hundred) (inclusive of all taxes).

 

Q. How many times one can appear for the test?

A. As many time as one requires. However, one has to pay each time.

 

Q. How soon can a candidate resit the test?

A. A candidate may resit the IELTS test at any time.

 

Q. Are answer sheets shown to the candidates if they opt for EoR/ Re-mark ?

A. No. IELTS materials are confidential and past papers are not released to candidates under any circumstances.
